CHAPTER 20

For the seventh time, Myles Bower woke up. And for the seventh time, he checked the door to see if dawn had finally come. The steel floor of the container was NOT built for sleeping in, and he did not think far enough ahead to bring a mattress. The sight of the rising sun brought relief—relief that they could finally resume the hunt. And, more specific to his aching back, relief that he didn’t have to lie in this container any longer.

He could hear the hunters moving around outside. When Myles stepped out, he saw Ethan standing by the side of the road, gnawing on jerky. Bryce was somewhere in the woods, out of sight.

Ethan gazed at the doc. “’Bout time you woke up. I was about to pound on that door.”

“Where’s your wife?”

“Taking care of business. You’d rather she squat here on the side of the road?”

“No, thank you.” Knowing how nonchalant you guys are, I’m shocked she isn’t. He rubbed his eyes. “Damn it. I wish I packed coffee.”

“Way ahead of you, Frankenstein,” Ethan said. He held out a small bag. Inside were coffee beans.

Myles shook his head. “I’m good. But thanks.”

Ethan tossed a bean into his mouth and munched on it. “Sorry. They don’t come with mocha flavored cream.”

“Toss me one, darling,” Bryce said. She stepped from the trees and held out her hand, like a baseball catcher. Ethan tossed her one, which she proceeded to crunch between her teeth. Myles winced, much to Bryce’s amusement. “Alright there, sport?”

“I’m good.”

“Good. I’m ready to carry on whenever you two are,” Bryce said.

“Let’s go.”

Right then, Myles registered the fullness in his bladder. “Give me just a minute.” He hurried off to the other side of the road.

Ethan turned to his wife and chuckled. “Little peashooter’s gotta get his load off.”

“Since we’re alone for a few minutes…” Bryce stepped up to him and nipped at his neck.

“You’ve been awfully frisky lately,” he said.

“You know this stuff gets me going,” she replied. She leaned back. “If it’s too much for you to handle…”

He grabbed her by the waist and pulled her in for a kiss. “Never.” They made out for another minute until the sound of Myles’ footsteps ended the little event. Ethan brushed a few strands of hair behind his wife’s ear. “Wanna go to South America after this? I hear there’s been several fatalities in northern Argentina. Jaguars down there are getting increasingly vicious. Maybe they’re starting to see people as a source of red meat.”

Bryce groped his crotch. “I think that sounds lovely.” She pulled him in for a ravenous kiss, which concluded with her teeth lightly clenching his lip.

Myles cleared his throat. Bryce maintained her grip for a few more seconds, then unslung her crossbow. “You finally ready, Doc? Or should we fix ya up some pancakes and eggs first?”

“Let’s finish this job, and I’ll personally treat you to brunch,” Myles said.

“Plane ride will do,” Ethan said. He slung his rifle strap over his right shoulder, checked the vial on his crossbow arrow, then studied the ground.
